Finding Harmony in Liminal Spaces: My Journey with Awai and Forest Therapy

Over the past eight months, I’ve wandered through trails—some familiar, some hidden—between Pescadero and Pacifica. I have been led by my heart to places where I feel deeply at home, eventually guiding me to my favorite beach, a stretch of coast where I now spend hours journaling with watercolors and tending to the land as part of my journey as a nature journaling educator.

Last week, I attended a conference though my organization (ANFT) and was intrigued by the idea of Awai: The Japanese concept of Awai (合い) refers to the idea of harmony or the delicate balance between opposing elements. In the context of forest therapy (Shinrin Yoku), Awai embodies the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing interconnectedness and the subtle exchanges that occur within this relationship. This concept encourages practitioners to be present and attuned to the environment, recognizing the nuances of their sensory experiences and how these interactions can lead to a deeper sense of well-being.

In relation to liminal space within the framework of ANFT (Association of Nature and Forest Therapy), Awai plays a crucial role. Liminal space is often defined as a transitional or transformative state where individuals can move from one phase of experience to another. In forest therapy, this can manifest as the threshold between everyday life and the immersive experience of nature.

The concept of Awai supports this by inviting participants to navigate this space with mindfulness, recognizing the ebb and flow of feelings and sensations that arise during their time in nature. In essence, Awai enriches the experience of forest therapy by encouraging practitioners to cultivate awareness of their inner landscape and the external environment, facilitating healing and connection. The liminal space acts as a gateway to transformation, where the principles of Awai guide individuals in their journey toward greater self-awareness and harmony (non-separation) with nature.
